Those things we take for granted

We all have things we take for granted don’t we? It’s not that we don’t care or that they don’t interest us, it’s just that they always happen, we don’t need to think about them, they’re like night and day.

The problem is when the things that we expect don’t happen. I think it’s more of a shock than if we didn’t expect them in the first place. It can seriously impact your mood and ruin your day. The most costly disruptions always happen when something we take completely for granted stops working for a minute.

Think of those times. The shower water is cold. Your usual clear drive to work is jammed. Your Wifi is down. In themselves they’re not the end of the world, but they are when you’ve overslept, when you need to get to a meeting and when you have to send that email.

These things that we take for granted are usually small things, but they have the potential to cause the greatest disruption.

So what’s the answer? This isn’t about being on edge all the time nor is it about walking around with a cloud of doom over your head waiting for something to go wrong. Do you know what? Things go wrong.

This is about staying in the moment, doing things consciously, on purpose. We tend to take things for granted when we’re comfortable, maybe too comfortable. So make sure you’re constantly stretching yourself, keeping your eyes open. Will this magically turn your cold water hot? No, but at least you’ll see the alternatives, like a good old fashioned kettle filled sink. Hay, I’m an 70’s child.
