It’s not uncommon for me to be asked to coach someone who’s finding it hard to lead a team, whether due to being a new leader, a team that’s not performing or something in between.
The business really wants to help them, give them the tools and techniques to lead so that the results are great.
Often though it’s not tools and techniques they need.
It’s not a skills challenge. It’s personal.
So often, the sticking point is that the leader themselves is just not in the best place. For whatever reason they are off track, not able to the best version of themselves.
So what? Well, think about it. Our mood drives our behaviour, our decision making.
If you don’t feel like yourself then you don’t act like yourself. Simple.
So, if you want to help improve performance, you want a team to ne high performing, then consider the person that’s leading.
Listen to them, be there for them, show compassion. Enable them to get back on track themselves, then watch the results improve. Get personal
